2027 Lexus NX Drops Pure Gas for an All-Hybrid Lineup

I have wanted a Lexus for as long as I can remember.

Take it back to when Mase was running around in shiny suits, name-dropping a Lex in his verses while I was sitting in high school taking notes. Before Maybachs and McLarens became the default flex, Hip Hop genuinely loved Lexus. It was clean, reliable and meant you had arrived.

That was the car we aspired to drive. It reminds me of the era when we used to get completely dressed up just to go for a drive. You threw on fresh premium denim, grabbed a crisp hoodie or whatever sports jersey was buzzing that week, laced up a pristine pair of uptowns. We never called them Air Force 1s. Sorry Nelly. Then hit the mall or pulled up to college parties just to look cool leaning against the hood.

The announced 2027 Lexus NX taps right back into that exact energy. Except this time around, the brand is ditching pure gas power entirely.

Lexus confirmed that for the 2027 model year, the NX compact crossover is going 100% electrified globally. You get your pick between standard hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains across four trims: Premium, Premium+, F SPORT, and Luxury.

If you are looking at the luxury compact crossover market, here are the major upgrades that actually matter.

What Powertrains Come in the 2027 Lexus NX?

Starting with the 2027 model year, every single NX sold will be an electrified hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

Lexus is leaning heavily on their newest generation e-Axle setup. They packaged an electric motor, and Power Control Unit into one tighter, lighter system. Lowering the physical placement drops the vehicle’s center of gravity, which helps curb that floaty, top-heavy feeling that ruins so many small luxury SUVs.

If you opt for the plug-in hybrid NX 450h+, the mechanical upgrades get serious:

  • Battery bump: The revised lithium-ion pack delivers an 8% increase in output alongside an 8% boost in capacity.
  • Real fast charging: DC fast charging comes standard on the PHEV grades, complete with a power-operated charging door.
  • Smarter battery layout: Lexus shifted the battery cells from the old longitudinal setup to a transverse layout. That change stiffens the chassis crosswise while keeping weight sitting low to the pavement.
  • Linear throttle tuning: The hybrid computer now uses more battery punch off the line to stop the engine from screaming at high RPM before the car catches up.

All-wheel-drive shoppers get the updated E-Four electronic AWD system. Instead of waiting for wheel slip on a patch of ice, the rear motor can run continuously during launch, hard cornering, and everyday straight-line cruising.

A Redesigned Chassis Tuned on the Nürburgring

A luxury crossover can look aggressive in press photos, but it means nothing if it drives like a cheap toy car over bridge joints.

Engineers reinforced the unibody structure front and rear, integrated structural bracing into the suspension towers, and bolted a new floor cross-member along the tunnel ridge. If you do not opt for the adaptive suspension, Lexus installed newly designed shocks with ultra-low-speed valves to eliminate harsh body roll over chopped-up pavement without sacrificing cabin softness.

They made other adjustments that make the vehicle handle like a compact sport sedan in tight parking lots while remaining planted on the highway.

Sharp Exterior Lines and Modern Black Accents

On the outside, the 2027 Lexus NX refines what the brand calls its “Vital Tech” design language. The overall proportions look wider and lower to the ground.

Up front, the signature spindle-style mesh grille integrates the cornering lamps and headlights seamlessly. Lexus traded out old-school chrome trim pieces on the mirrors and window moldings for blacked-out accents, which sharpens the overall silhouette.

Lighting gets a noticeable overhaul:

  • The front headlamps combine daytime running lights and turn signals into a sharp dual-line setup.
  • The rear taillights showcase Lexus’s first “Double L” light signature running across the tailgate, accented by an illuminated center Lexus emblem.
  • Two new exterior paint shades join the palette: Shaded Ivy (an earthy ash green) and Incognito (a cool, flat gray exclusive to F SPORT).

If you step up to the F SPORT grade, you get functional aero upgrades like front under-spoilers, rear corner aero devices, 20-inch aluminum wheels, and red brake calipers behind piano-black body moldings.

The Cabin: Standard 14-Inch Touchscreen and Cabin Scents

My favorite part is that the biggest headache of previous generations is officially gone. Now there is a massive 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen that is now standard on every single 2027 NX trim, sitting right alongside a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Fire.

The screen handles your media, cloud navigation, and wireless connectivity with zero fuss. An integrated factory dashcam comes standard, recording incident footage directly from the vehicle’s external safety cameras so you never have to stick an ugly suction cup to your windshield.

Audiophiles can opt for the premium Mark Levinson audio system, which features perforated metal speaker grilles with integrated ambient illumination rings that glow through the door panels.

Interior color choices include two fresh options: Abalos (a warm, composed tone modeled after Mars sand dunes) and Radiant Red (exclusive to F SPORT cockpits).

Trims and Availability

The 2027 Lexus NX lineup breaks down into four well-defined grades:

  1. Premium: The entry luxury tier. Available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with the hybrid engine; AWD only with the plug-in hybrid.
  2. Premium+: Adds elevated comfort items and tech packages. FWD or AWD on hybrid; standard AWD on PHEV.
  3. F SPORT: Built for dynamic styling with tuned aero, 20-inch wheels, adaptive suspension options, and exclusive red interior leather. Standard AWD across both hybrid and PHEV variants.
  4. Luxury: The fully loaded comfort spec featuring Sensory Concierge and premium leather upholstery. Standard AWD on all powertrains.

Global rollouts for the updated 2027 Lexus NX are scheduled to begin toward the end of 2026.
